Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
It is the 23rd century. Admiral James T. Kirk is an instructor at Starfleet Academy and feeling old; the prospect of attending his ship, the USS Enterprise –– now a training ship –– on a two-week cadet cruise does not make him feel any younger. But the training cruise becomes a deadly serious mission when his nemesis Khan Noonien Singh –– infamous conqueror from late 20th-century Earth –– appears after years of exile. Khan later revealed that the planet Ceti Alpha VI exploded, and shifted the orbit of the fifth planet as a Mars-like haven. He begins capturing Project Genesis, a top-secret device holding the power of creation itself, and schemes the utter destruction of Kirk. With the assistance of the Enterprise crew, Admiral Kirk must stop his old nemesis from using the life-generating Genesis Device as the ultimate weapon.

Winner of Academy of Fantasy, Science Fiction and Horror Films Awards, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Directed by Nicholas Meyer. Written by Harve Bennett and Jack B. Sowards. Based on the TV series created by Gene Roddenberry. Produced by Robert Sallin. From Paramount Pictures. (Color, 1982, USA, 113 minutes, rated PG) Starring William Shatner, Ricardo Montalban, Leonard Nimoy, Kirstie Alley, DeForest Kelley, Walter Koenig.

The Montalbán

The Montalbán, Hollywood’s classic theater reborn for a new era of screened entertainment and performing arts, is located at 1615 Vine Street just south of the world-famous Hollywood & Vine intersection. The gorgeous Beaux Arts building was the first legitimate live Broadway-style theater in Hollywood, and is one of the few remaining mid-sized and fully equipped proscenium theaters in Los Angeles. Featuring orchestra, mezzanine, loge and balcony seating, it is known for its excellent sightlines and acoustics, and boasts a versatile rooftop outfitted with a bar, concession stand, full kitchen and an open-air movie theater complete with a large projection screen and state-of-the-art projector, noise cancelling headphones and even blankets for a chilly night.

Over the years the Montalbán has been owned by Howard Hughes, CBS Radio, A&P grocery chain heir Huntington Hartford and the Greek Theater’s James Doolittle. UCLA took over in the 1980s until the Ricardo Montalbán Foundation bought the building in 1999. Emmy Award-winning actor Ricardo Montalbán’s vision was to create a presence in Hollywood that provided inspiration and employment for young Latinos as well as other underrepresented people throughout the community. In recent years, under the direction of Montalbán’s son-in-law Gilbert Smith, nearly $4 million has been invested into theater restoration to help preserve this good old classic that contributes to making Hollywood a very special and incredibly creative place
